Floodlit Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens
3 children, 3 torches, 3 big coats and 2 parents, 2 cameras plus the obligatory glow sticks is the prep for a spooky evening. Abbotsbury Floodlit Gardens is billed as Enchanted and it definitely veers more toward that angle than spooky. The pheasants are settling for the night which gives an appropriate backdrop of noise and as you follow the candlelit path a kind of Tolkein theme develops. But to a 6 year old its still really spooky….
The very direct lady at the ticket office shouts, “DO NOT veer off the path as it is VERY dangerous beyond the lights, you may not find your way back”. This is an open invitation for male parent to flaunt the rules but we do follow the lit track (at the mercy of small one no 1 who has a part time job at The Met) and an Enchanted evening is had by all.
- braver types should visit during Halloween week as there are witches up trees and other generally spooky stuff going on.
- worth the drive at dusk along the coast road between Abbotsbury and Bridport…amazing sunset
- buy glowsticks at the ticket office or shop
- check up for opening times at Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens
