Fleet Lagoon, Weymouth

Where Weymouth meets Portland is the start of the Fleet Lagoon: Chesil Beach rises up along the length of it with water either side.  Here are the still active oyster beds and isolated fishermens huts with slipways into the lagoon run along the waters edge. In grey Winter light it feels like a time long gone. Bring wellies if you want to walk along the coastal path here: a great walk with views along the Chesil.

Really wanted to go to the Crab House Cafe  which always gets rave reviews but we had eaten lunch and it was super busy anyhow, looks like booking ahead is de rigeur. We remembered the Chesil Beach Cafe around the corner on the Portland road so there it was for tea and ice cream. Its the Wild Garlic owners doing a more casual pasta/burgers/seafood/salad menu in the newly built Chesil Beach visitors centre (would be nicest to sit with the doors open in the Summer), the view is fantastic being set right on the beach. Sunsets to die for….

We will be back, Portland  has such a fascinating kind of Mad Max landscape. Photographic heaven (and some great places to eat).

  • Crab House Cafe opening hours, check website.
  • Crab House Cafe owns the oyster farm so expect plenty on the menu.
  • Chesil beach Cafe open everyday 10am-4pm, some tables held for bookings.
  • parking at both locations.
