Ammonite Pavement, Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis

Monmouth Pavement View

Walk as far  West as you can on Monmouth beach at low tide. After some traversing of boulders, you reach an amazing ledge known as the Ammonite Pavement.  Here hundreds of ammonites can be seen in the beautiful grey flat rock and hundreds of other fossils amongst the scattered stones. Beautiful slabs of rounded rocks battered by the sea.  I have only recently found the pleasure of fossil hunting gratifying, especially with an eager child clutching a small fossiling hammer. To them its buried treasure.

  • Go out at low tide, takes about 15 mins to get to the end
  • Wear trainers to scale the boulders
  • No digging any fossils out of the pavement itself
  • Watch for falling rocks from the cliff especially after heavy rain
